Why do you hear more and more about a twisted flywheel?
Many drivers are looking for a little more spice and a sportier feeling, without having to convert everything right away. With a turned flywheel you mainly change the character of your engine: acceleration is more eager and you feel small throttle movements immediately. The downside is that you sometimes lose some peace and comfort on the street.
What is a flywheel and what does it normally do?
The flywheel sits on the crankshaft and rotates with the engine. Due to its weight, it acts as a kind of buffer: it helps the crankshaft to rotate smoothly between combustion strokes. This makes the engine run quieter, especially at idle and at low revs.
On many scooters and motorcycles, the flywheel (or the area around it) is also part of the ignition and often part of the magneto for power generation. Depending on the type, such an adjustment can also have an effect on the electrical side.
What exactly is a spun flywheel?
A finished flywheel is an original flywheel from which material has been removed, usually on a lathe. The goal: less rotating mass. The flywheel must then be tightly balanced, otherwise you will get more vibrations at higher speeds.
This is different from an inner rotor or racing ignition. With an inner rotor, you replace the complete system with a smaller, lighter rotor with matching ignition. That often feels even brighter, but is usually more work in terms of adjustment and less convenient for daily street use.
What does a turned flywheel do to performance?
Faster throttle response and acceleration
Because it flywheel is lighter, the engine has to rev less mass. You especially notice this during short sprints, pulling away and picking up speed. The block just climbs faster.
Influence on torque perception and driving feeling
A turned flywheel usually does not provide extra top power in itself. What does change is how it feels: the speed drops faster as soon as you close the throttle and the engine responds more directly. Some people find it sporty, others find it a bit nervous.
Behavior at low speeds and idling
With less flywheel mass, the running often becomes more restless at low speeds. Idle becomes more critical for adjustment, and when driving away slowly, the engine can stall more quickly if the carburetion is just too lean or the idle is too low.
Practical example of street versus sprint or circuit
For sprints and circuits, where your revs are high and fast response is important, a lighter flywheel is often a good fit. For daily street use (especially with a lot of stop-and-go) it can cause extra unrest and vibrations, making the 'gain' feel less significant.

Is it bad for reliability?

Can I turn a flywheel myself?
This is not a good plan without the right equipment and experience. It is not just about removing material, but also about working dimensionally and precisely balancing.

The principle remains the same, but the effect and the desired walking rest differ per block. Many 4-stroke riders find a smoother run important, which makes a lighter flywheel less attractive for street use.
