A standard ignition on a 2-stroke scooter has a fixed ignition timing that you cannot adjust. That isn’t necessary: the factory has already set that timing for a standard engine. Once you install a race ignition, that changes. A Malossi, Italkit, HPI, or Selettra inner rotor ignition gives you the ability to set the ignition timing yourself. If you don’t do this, or do it incorrectly, your engine will perform worse than it should.
What is a race ignition?
A race ignition replaces the standard outer rotor with a lighter inner rotor. This reduced rotor weight provides quicker throttle response and higher RPMs. Most race ignitions use a CDI that determines the spark timing. Analog CDIs have one fixed ignition point that you set manually. Digital CDIs, like the Malossi MHR Eprom, Italkit with curve, or PVL Digital, have a variable curve where timing changes per RPM. The latter doesn’t require manual adjustment at a single point but installing it requires attention.
What is advance ignition and why do you set it?
Advance ignition is the moment the spark plug fires relative to the piston’s top dead center. A 2-stroke engine needs time to ignite and burn the mixture. If the spark plug fires too early, pressure builds while the piston is still rising, causing knocking and potential engine damage. If it fires too late, power is lost. The correct advance depends on your setup: cylinder capacity, cylinder, carburetor, and exhaust together determine the optimal timing. For a Malossi ignition on a standard Piaggio 2-stroke block, 2.25mm before top dead center is a common starting point.
What do you need?
To adjust a race ignition you need calipers or a micrometer to measure piston position, a flywheel or pulley puller to remove the rotor, an Allen key set, and the ignition’s manual. For the right tools, check the tool transmission range at Fresh Parts. The manual is important because each brand provides different recommended advance values.
How to set the advance ignition
Install the stator and rotor without tightening the bolts. Find the top dead center by slowly turning the crankshaft and measuring piston position with a micrometer. Then set the piston to the recommended advance, e.g. 2.25mm before top dead center. Align the markings on the stator and rotor and tighten the bolts. Measure again to ensure the position hasn’t shifted during tightening. Start the scooter and let it warm up. If the engine feels rough or knocks, the advance is too early. If it feels flat and lacks power, the timing is too late.

Frequently asked questions about adjusting race ignition
Do I need to adjust a standard ignition?
No. A standard outer rotor ignition on a 2-stroke scooter has a fixed timing determined by design. Adjustment isn’t possible or necessary. Only with a race ignition having an adjustable stator do you manually set the advance ignition.
How much advance ignition does a Malossi ignition need?
For a standard Piaggio 2-stroke block, 2.25mm before top dead center is a common starting point. For a tuned setup with a large cylinder, this can vary. Always consult the manual included with the ignition.
What is the difference between analog and digital race ignition?
An analog CDI has one fixed ignition moment set manually. A digital CDI, like Malossi MHR Eprom or Italkit with curve, has a variable curve where ignition timing automatically varies across the RPM range. A digital ignition performs better throughout RPM but is also more expensive.
What happens if the advance ignition is set too early?
Then the spark plug fires while the piston is still rising, causing pressure at the wrong moment. This produces knocking sounds, increases engine temperature, and can cause engine damage if sustained. Always adjust advance if the engine knocks.
Does a Malossi race ignition fit a Gilera Runner?
Yes. Malossi, Italkit, and HPI race ignitions fit Piaggio 125-180cc 2-stroke engines, which are also in the Gilera Runner. Check each product to see if your specific engine and model year are supported.
